A Beginner’s Guide For Using CBD Oil

In this post I will walk you through everything you need to know about Cannabidiol (CBD), which is a natural extract from a hemp plant. I will explain what CBD oil is, it’s possible health benefits, how to use it, the possible side effects, where to buy it, and clear up any misconceptions surrounding it. I am aware of the controversy surrounding the hot topic of marijuana and hemp so please keep an open mind while reading this.

What Is CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant. Being that it is a non-psychoactive drug means it will not get you high. CBD can make up to 40% of the plant’s extract. Until recently may people were only familiar with the compound in cannabis called delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol or better known as THC. THC is the compound in marijuana that gets you high, whereas CBD oil has zero or very little THC.

This depends on which species of cannabis the CBD is extracted from. This might sound confusing but stay with me here and I’ll go into further detail later about the two. For now species 1 is referred to as hemp and species 2 is referred to as marijuana. Later on I will go over the difference between the two and how you can tell them apart if you were to ever see them side by side.

Hemp Oil vs CBD Oil

Hemp oil vs CBD oil my favorite topic and the first misconception a lot of people have. Yes the two are similar but they are also different and used for different things. Hemp oil is an extract taken from the seeds of the plant. Because it is extracted from industrial hemp it has a minimal amount of psychoactive substance, THC in this case. CBD oil is extracted from industrial cannabis or hemp. The oil is made from the flower, stalk, or leaves but never from the seeds like hemp oil. Hemp oil contains low levels of cannabidiol usually less than 25 parts per million. CBD oil on the other hand contains up to 15% of CBD. The higher the CBD content the more potential health benefits it has.

Hemp Oil Uses

As you can see hemp oil has far less cannabidiol than CBD oil, but there are still some health benefits from the oil. Hemp oil is 100% legal, you can buy it online, and companies can run advertisements for it on Facebook and Google.

·         Hemp oil can be used for cooking and because it’s loaded with nutrients, it offers many benefits.

·         It can be used to form oil based plastics, such as water bottles. Best part is the plastic would be biodegradable and non-toxic.

·         Can be used as a moisturizer for dry and healthy skin.

·         Hemp oil can be used to make soap, lotions, and even food.

CBD Oil Uses

Because CBD oil has more cannabidiol in it, it offers more potential medical benefits. CBD oil is legal in all 50 states and most parts of the world and you can even buy it online. However, because it is on the “Unapproved pharmaceuticals and supplements” list on Google you cannot run paid advertisements for it. Here is a quick overview of uses for CBD oil, but I will go into further detail a little later on.

·         Can be used to potentially treat diseases.

·         Can potentially reduce anxiety, depression, seizures, pain, and sleep disorders

·         It can also potentially help with weight loss.

Hemp vs Marijuana

Hemp and marijuana are related but they are not the same. The main differences between the two are its applications. Marijuana is used primarily for medical and recreational purposes while hemp is used as a dietary supplement, skin care, clothing, cooking with, and many other applications marijuana would not be used for. In fact research shows hemp has over 25,000 possible uses. Hemp and marijuana are both cannabis but hemp has less than .3% of THC, while marijuana has a THC level anywhere from 5%-35%. Again THC is the substance that alters your state of mind and gets you high. They are also both grown differently; marijuana is grown in a controlled space and requires a lot of care to make sure the quality is there, while hemp can be grown with minimal care and in most climates.

Another key difference is the appearance of each cannabis plant. Marijuana usually has thicker leaves, a tight bud, and look like a nugget with orange “hairs”; they also have a bush like look. Hemp has thinner leaves which usually only grow towards the top of the stalk; the plant can grow up to 20 feet tall. The two cannabis species are also grown differently. Hemp is usually grown in acres of land closely together and their growth cycle is anywhere from 108-120 days. Marijuana is grown in a warm/humid climate usually spaced out from each other and their growth cycle is shorter than Hemp usually around 60-90 days.

Is CBD Oil Legal?

As previously mentioned CBD oil is legal in all 50 states and many other parts of the world. However, some areas in the world may have bans and laws against it. Be sure to check the laws and regulations of CBD oil in your local area before purchasing.

Benefits Of CBD Oil

CBD oil is great to use because it can provide many health benefits. Even if you don’t have a medical condition or a physiological disorder CBD may be a better substitute than drinking alcohol to help you relax. Not to mention it may even be cheaper if you are a heavier drinker. CBD oil can be used to relieve pain. The human body has a unique system called the endocannabinoid system or ECS for short which regulates functions such as sleep, appetite, the immune system, and pain. Some studies have shown that cannabidiol can reduce chronic pain by targeting the endocannabinoid receptors in the body. You can take CBD oil for anxiety and depression. There’s no denying mental health disorders are a big problem in America and the world, while people suffer from anxiety or depression they are usually prescribed pharmaceutical drugs that have numerous side effects. CBD can help these mental health disorders by targeting the brain’s receptors for serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates the body’s mood and behavior.

CBD oil can also help people with cancer, now while it may not treat or cure cancer it can help with symptoms for treating cancer such as chemotherapy and radiation. Patients who use chemotherapy often have side effects such as vomiting and feeling nauseous. CBD oil can be used to make those feelings go away and align the chemicals in the body. CBD can potentially treat acne due to its anti-inflammatory properties.  CBD oil can also be used to kick bad habits such as cigarette smoking or withdrawals. CBD oil can also help you lose weight because it can alter your appetite by controlling the body’s ECS, mentioned above.

CBD oil can help with neurological symptoms, diseases and disorders. Some of the more common ones are Epilepsy, type 1 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and multiple sclerosis (MS). Now we are still in the early stages of doing research and the benefits of CBD oil used for these disorders, but there have been some positive data released already. Always consult with your doctor prior to trying cannabidiol , and please keep in mind that the products mentioned in this post do not guarantee treating any illness, these are general benefits of CBD oil.

Who Can Use CBD Oil

Anyone can use CBD oil including adults, children, and pets (dogs, cats, and even horses). If you are planning on giving cannabidiol oil to your kids, make sure you consult with a doctor prior to taking. Also if you plan to buy the oil make sure you are 21 years or older.

How To Use CBD Oil

Now CBD oil can be used in a variety of ways. Many people have the misconception that you have to smoke it, which is not true. Now vaping CBD oil is the fastest way for the oil to get into your body but there are many alternatives if you prefer not to smoke it. Below is a list of ways to enjoy the benefits of cannabidiol oil.

·         Smoke it

·         Edibles

·         Vape pen

·         Creams

·         Drinks

·         Pills

·         Strips

·         Patches

·         Dab rigs

I mentioned a few ways on how you can enjoy CBD oil, but I wanted to go into more detail about the 4 most practical ways of using the oil. Those ways are vaping, eating edibles, using the cream, or taking CBD shots.

CBD Oil Vapes

The first and one of the most common ways to consume cannabidiol would be vaping the oil. CBD oil vape, e-liquids, and vape juice are all liquids made of hemp extract that are designed to be smoked and inhaled. CBD vaporizers and pens offer a quick way to enjoy and experience the benefits of CBD. For the best experience and taste I recommend you start with one of the most popular flavors such as watermelon, strawberry or jungle juice. Now there are many other flavors you can vape but these are just some of the top sellers from our experience.

If you are new to vaping or have never smoked before you might be interested in trying a vape starter pen.  These come with full instructions and are great for new users. Vaping is a soothing activity and when using CBD oil it helps get into the bloodstream the fastest. CBD oil will start relieving pain and help relax you. Now vaping can become addictive but you can stop at any time and stop using CBD without worrying about any side effects.

CBD Edibles

A lot of people prefer vaping CBD since it’s the quickest way for the oil to enter your system. However, edibles will benefit you more in the end. Even though it might take a bit longer for the edibles to take effect (as little as 30 minutes to two hours), the effects will last longer than if you vaped it. Since the CBD is mixed with food and not taken straight up, the CBD is released slower and lasts longer since the food needs to be digested. The effects from edibles can last two to four hours longer than when CBD in inhaled. By eating edibles, you are able to tell how much cannabidiol you are actually getting, since the packaging shows you a serving size, as well as how much CBD is in a serving. When you smoke it, you can’t get an exact measurement of how much CBD you are inhaling. Edibles are also an easier option when you need to take the edge off, or relieve the pain. It’s much easier to just pop an edible in your mouth than it is to stop what you’re doing to have to go outside for a smoke break. Edibles can be found in vape shops, but personally I believe the easiest way to find them is online, and one of the best sources I’ve found so far is Diamond CBD

Types Of CBD Edibles

There are many different kinds of edibles that you can enjoy. From gummies to chocolate to cake pops to even sticks of honey that are infused with CBD. There are many different foods, strengths and flavors to choose from.

CBD gummies come in range of different kinds and flavors, like CBD gummy bears, watermelon slice gummies, twin cherry gummies, peach ring gummies, rainbow bites, and much more! Most of the packages come with 100mg of cannabidiol, but can contain anywhere from 30mg to 200mg of CBD. The amount of CBD you should take will all depend on what exactly you’re using the oil for and your weight, below I will explain how to get the proper dosage.

CBD Cream & Lotion

If you are opposed to vaping or eating edibles, you can use CBD creams and lotions to get the same benefits of cannabidiol. CBD cream is made from hemp extract (sourced from industrial hemp), menthol and essential oils. One that stands out to me is tea tree oil which is great for acne.

I just want to confirm CBD lotion is the same as cream. When cannabidiol is used in creams, lotion, or patches it has shown promising results to help acne, dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, joint pain, muscle soreness and also for wrinkles (anti-aging). To be clear the cream will not get you high because it is made from industrial hemp and not marijuana which contains the chemical THC (which alters your state of mind). The CBD cream works by absorbed through your skin and can provide hours of pain relief for your muscles. When using CBD lotion you’ll also get the benefits of moisturizing your skin without leaving you feeling greasy.

Anyone who suffers from muscle soreness or the other conditions mentioned above can and should use it. Another great use is for athletes before or after exercise to help speed up their recovery. Some people might also consider using a CBD lotion as their main moisturizer because it is cheaper than designer brands and offers more health benefits such as anti-aging.

CBD Drinks

Another form of taking CBD is by having drinks infused with it. Just like all the other forms, cannabidiol will not get you high when you drink it either, but will still give the same benefits as if you took it any other way. There are a lot of different beverages to choose from; CBD shots, lean shots, coffee, and CBD water. Many people prefer CBD drinks because they are quick and discrete as opposed to vaping.

CBD Shots and Flavors

Diamond CBD offers many different flavors of shots and each will provide relaxation for 4-6 hours. The flavors that are currently available to buy online are jungle juice, grape, and berry. The shots are designed for single use and are very discrete because they are no bigger than a 5 hour energy shot. Simply twist off the cap and drink the CBD infused shot and enjoy the all-natural benefits and relaxation. Each shot is quality tested to ensure and guarantee the highest standards.

Out of all the methods mentioned above I prefer to take the CBD oil directly under my tongue. You take the oil and put it under your tongue for 30-90 seconds and then swallow it, also known as “sublingual application”. Every once in a while I’ll buy a pack of CBD gummy bears just to switch it up and see if my preference has changed.  You can use whatever method you prefer, I just wanted to mention my preference in case it helps one of you.

CBD Oil Dosage

If this is your first time using CBD oil or if you have been using it for a while, finding the right dosage can be challenging. Since the FDA has not created a daily intake for CBD, it does not having a serving size. This means that we the consumer would blindly use our best judgement, trust the company we buy from “recommended serving”, talking to our CBD “expert” friends who take it, or use a common rule of thumb that one drop is a good guess. Well there isn’t a golden rule but you can get the proper dosage of CBD oil by using your body weight, starting small and increasing over time, or consulting a physician.

If you plan on using a CBD oil dosage from your body weight a general rule of thumb is to 1-6MG per every 10 pounds, I would recommend 1MG per 10 pounds personally. But again there a few more factors to consider as well such as how serve your symptoms are whether that’s pain, anxiety or another disorder. You can find the chart on Honest Marijuana’s page that has a recommended dose for your weight and symptoms.

If you start small and gradually increase your dosage of CBD, you should first get your initial dosage based on your weight and then increase slowly if you aren’t feeling any relief. Make sure you monitor your body’s reaction and write down how much you are taking if you use this strategy until you find the right dosage. Lastly when in doubt talk to a physician, and use this method first if you have a preexisting medical condition. Since CBD oil is pretty new in the market there isn’t a lot of doctors who have experience with it yet, but more and more doctors are learning and a physician you see regular should know how your body will react to CBD.

CBD Overdose

Cannabidiols are non-toxic, with zero fatal overdoses ever reported. If you happen to take too much CBD oil it can lead to drowsiness, lack of energy, upset stomach and diarrhea. So at the time of writing this you cannot overdose on CBD oil.

CBD Oil Side Effects

Researchers haven’t found any significant side effects of using CBD oil, even when using high dosages. But CBD oil is still relatively new to the market, so if you see a change in your mood or vital signs you should immediately consult a physician. Some of the side effects reported were tiredness, a change in appetite, or the worst case diarrhea.

To prevent any side effects or risks if you are lactating, pregnant, or if you are seriously ill make sure you consult your doctor before consuming cannabidiol oil.

CBD Drug Test

The short answer to if CBD oil will test positive on a drug test is no. The only way that you might test positive or have a false positive is if you were to consume a large amount of cannabidiol above 1,000-2,000MG a day. Because the drug is unregulated some companies might sell CBD oil that contains 1/10th of THC. That’s why it’s important to use trusted companies and to buy pure CBD oil from companies such as Diamond CBD or Charlotte’s Web. Quality matters so keep that in mind before you just look for the cheapest CBD oil online; sometimes you get what you pay for!

Where To Buy CBD Oil?

If you are looking to buy CBD oil, I would recommend you buy online, my favorite brand can be found here. I especially like them because the prices are reasonable and there are many options on how to consume CBD oil. The CBD gummy bears are my favorite! Besides buying online you can find CBD oil at dispensaries, or health food shops.
